Parrish The Parrish Chronicles Book 1 edition by Shannen Crane Camp Paranormal Romance eBooks

This ghost-hunting foursome—Parrish, Sadie, Brighton, and Deacon—are awesome in their quirky uniqueness. I loved all four of them. In their early 20’s, they’re still trying to work out their place in life, relationships, personal identities. All while hunting ghosts. Sadie has a lot of the insecurities of a teenager but she is getting her wings. I found her character to be completely believable. Sadie’s best friend, Brighton, is a techno genius who is afraid of ghosts, not to mention phobias and allergies galore—but she’s not a wimp. Deacon is a skeptic who is along for the adventure. (And maybe some romance.) And Parrish—oh, my gosh! He is brilliant, a tad sociopathic, and just plain weird. (And I totally have a book-boy crush on him.)

The interaction and dialog between this group as they try to solve the mystery is funny and clever. They work together well. Well, sort of… maybe I should say, quirkily good enough. I loved it.

Plot? Okay, this is tricky because there are twists and turns, and at times I was wondering if they’re chasing ghosts or a murderer? Or something else entirely. As I was reading, I was trying to figure it out—but then I just gave up and decided to enjoy the ride. And it was a great ride! There is a lot to be revealed in future books, this one doesn’t quite wrap up the mystery and hand it to you with a bow on top. But the big (almost) reveal of the mystery letter and the “person” behind the job was good.

There’s quite a bit of genre-mixing in this story, which for me just added to the enjoyment. First, this is a supernatural story because GHOSTS! And there are plenty of them. But other than a few scenes that made me stop reading it at night (like the one in her hotel bathroom & at the house at the end), it wasn’t too creepy. Then you get the Urban Fantasy/Paranormal part because it’s a contemporary setting, and each of the foursome have some unique, almost otherworldly talents, some of which are only hinted at in this book. But it’s clear that they belong together as a team.

Romance? Yes! Just enough to be interesting, but not enough to take over the fantasy/paranormal elements. And mystery—when they get an anonymous letter with a job offer that’s too good to be true, things start to get twisty.

If you like ghosts and mild horror, I recommend this book. I’d be fine with teens reading it. Although labelled as New Adult, there’s not the sex or language that you often find in those books. I can’t wait until the next book comes out to re-visit these four ghost hunters and see what they discover next! I give it a strong 4 1/2 STARS.

Parrish The Parrish Chronicles Book 1 edition by Shannen Crane Camp Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

* I received this ebook for free from Future House Publishing in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own*

I found the book to be a good read and an interesting story line. I think it is well suited for a young adult audience and definitely keeps you guessing about what they will uncover with the "ghosts". In the process they learn a few things about relationships, each other and how things tie together. What could those noises and bumps in the night truly be?

The writing by the author is well done and she draws you in with paragraphs such as the one I have included here. It's always been interesting to me to find out what a ghost or spirit may be trying to communicate. In this paragraph they heard something while investigating and they are listening to the sound they captured back on the tape they recorded.

"I couldn't quite understand why, but the voice made the hair on the back of my arms stand up. This
childlike sound made me feel uneasy. Looking around the cramped bathroom, I could see I wasn't the only one. Deacon had stopped making faces and Jefferson had his eyes closed, trying to figure out what was being said" (Camp, chapter 9 location 1228, 24% on a kindle).

This is the first book in a series and I am looking forward to reading more and following along on the adventures. Overall I felt it was a good book -)
Ever read a book and get goosebumps while reading it?

I did while reading Parrish. Like major goosebumps.

This book is that good. It is a combination of romance, supernatural and mystery with a healthy dose of humor sprinkled in. I absolutely loved Sadie, Jefferson, Deacon and Brighton’s character. They were all written in such a way that you couldn’t help but like them and hate their character flaws. If you want to know exactly what those flaws are….read the book.

The romance between Sadie and Jefferson was scary and sweet at the same time. Scary because Jefferson is majorly intense and very weird but sweet because it was written as being one of those “I couldn’t help but fall in love with him even though he is super weird” romances. I do have a mental image of Jefferson with huge alien like eyes, though, from the author’s description. She described him as having “big owl eyes” and my imagination just kinda took off with it.

The plot was great too. I loved that Sadie, Jefferson, Deacon and Brighton are paranormal investigators. That is something that I have always wanted to do but have been too chicken…lol. The excitement, and disbelief, of them hitting paranormal hotspots, and having a cross country trip at the same time just leapt off the pages.

The ending was perfect and it had a huge twist that was hinted at when the foursome was in Boston. I honestly didn’t see it coming and it totally threw me for a loop. I actually put the book down and stared into space trying to process it for a minute, it was that much of a shock.

How many stars will I give it? 5

Will I read it again? Yes and I hope to read the next book. I am hooked on the characters. I need to see what happens to Sadie, Jefferson, Deacon and Brighton.

Will I reccomend it to family and friends? Yes. This would be a great book for those who are just starting to read the fantasy/paranormal/romance genre.

Age range Teen on up. It is a very clean book, so I would say maybe middle school if they are mature enough. And when I say very clean no sex (but a lot of kissing) and no swearing.
