The Wanderess is told as if the main character was narrating the story, a unique point of view in my experience, it was beautifully told. I have been to quite a few different states with Colorado as the center of my world of experience, but I've never been overseas anywhere. Saul and Saskia wander, either chasing each other or together, through France, Spain, Northern Italy, and beyond, and unlike some books I've read, I was able to enjoy the journey as well as the drama of Saskia's drive to see the fulfillment of her prophecy. Of Saul's stubbornness as he determined to keep just as many secrets as Saskia did, even the one that would see the fruition of her prophecy that much sooner. I was drawn into their love, the passion and the turmoil of it, as it progressed through the growing pains of jealousy and trust, as it was tested by betrayal and entrapment. And best of all, I was able to see the quaint countryside and it's colorful people of all varieties. The world Roman Payne allowed me to see was full of life of all types, all types; do you know how hard that is to do? From peasants and common workers to aging actresses, from charlatans to royalty. They were all there. From summer in Paris to the dry heat of Tripoli.

The Wanderess Roman Payne 9780985228132 Books Reviews

Roman Payne is the type of author who, once read, never leaves you. His high standards for what can rightly be considered 'literature' permeates anything else you read, and always brings you back.
The Wanderess is introduced by a narrator in search of another story, but when he meets Saul & Saskia, his expectations are crushed and rebuilt into a bigger story than he originally hoped to find. Isn't this similar to what happens to each of us in life? We hope & strive towards one thing, only to come up short, but in the midst of our despair, something greater, more divine visits us and leaves a greater gift than we would ever dared imagine.
I'd prefer not to ruin the story for you with a spoiler, but if you've ever experienced the confusing conflict of what feels like a failed world created by a divine being, only to be surprised by what is possible if we expect less, do our work, and reap our reward, then this book is a portable mirror reflecting all the stunning polarities of life & living.
If you want to start with just one book, I recommend The Wanderess as your introduction to the modern world of classic literature, as brilliantly illustrated by Roman Payne.
I finished this book tonight. It is a great, mysterious novel with passages of amorous beauty and noble manners. There are times when my concern with the central love affair seemed to lull, but then the story turned and exploded forward like a thoroughbred from the gate. My only qualm is with the fate of --- (you'll know who I mean), which differentiates this from a moral parable, and makes it a reflection of a certain life; advancing by cruelty and accident at times, or a flower strewn path. I'll be thinking about this story as I sleep tonight!
This book means so much to me. I search for writers that make me feel emotion, that make me look inside and search for who I really am.,, this book did that. It's magic.
This is really a great book! It has all the elements that won't let me put in down without finding out what happens next--travel with a little history included, romance, conflict & intrigue, & poignant resolution. It is sensitive & sometimes fun, but also touches on many of life's important questions regarding honor, fidelity, trust, sexuality & familial connection. It has an out of the ordinary timelessness where the reader can settle on his/her own idea of the epoch, harkening back to life in earlier centuries & yet with essentially modern language & idioms. This is a story that will be remembered.
Classics came to mind as I read The Wanderess. Classics by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Robert Louis Stevenson and others. I was enchanted by the travel, the intrigue, along with an enduring story of passion, love and protection.

A Tale of Two Cities was foremost in my mind at the end and I thought the deception, well acted.

Roman Payne took a dusty, celebrated form of writing up, shook it out and created a story well worth your time. I am glad I found it and read it. So many fond memories of other stories and books came forth as I read about the travels and tribulations of the reporter and narrator, that I can highly recommend it to those who enjoy immersing themselves in European Victorian streets, shops and hotels. Smells, tastes, sounds and smells traveled through time while I read and I was happily surprised at the resolution of the problem.
This was a beautifully written novel. You feel like you're reading about another time. The story is told in an odd way. The original narrator witnesses an interesting scene between a man and young woman and becomes briefly involved. Later he runs into the man who fills him in on their story. Most of the book is narrated by this second man who relates their dramatic and mysterious story over glasses of wine with the first narrator. There's mystery, romance, danger, jealousy and a few twists, especially at the end. Roman Payne has a wonderful and poetic way with words and the story transports you to another time and place. A great book.~
I'll keep it short. Anyone who can, as Roman Payne has done in "The Wanderess", write a "timeless" novel, is a true author. Averse to hyped topics, the author tells a tale of adventure, struggle, love, compassion, humor, hope, and "noblesse" that succeeds in joining the positive aspects of modern story telling with the great 19th century tradition. The style has a "modern" flair but at the same time reminded me of the great French stylists of yore. BTW, one of the most important reason for the five stars is Mr. Payne's style. Although we're living in a hyper story-driven time, it is my firm opinion that style in literature is of the utmost importance. Mr. Payne opens a lot of registers and he does it deftly. As a true Fleming, I raise my glass of world-famous Flemish Monastery Beer to this "modern classic."
