Candle Man Book Two The Society of Dread Glenn Dakin Books

Glenn Dakin's Candleman series really is like opening up a Pandora's Box of fiendish delight. Reading the two books (so far) in the series, back to back, the mind is boggled by the huge array of fantastic creatures and characters. It's almost like dipping into an almanac of mythological creatures but with an intriguing story to link the madness together. First, we have Theo Wickland, the Candleman himself, he's a hero unlike any others. He's weedy, he's innocent and even walking upstairs leaves him faint with fatigue. Then we have the hideous and ancient Dodo, a Victorian villain who becomes a reluctant ally, a villain who stinks to high heaven. Then there's the fiendish Dr. Pyre, a nihilist who wants the world to burn, a villain worthy of James Bond if ever there was one. Then we have others who you immediately mistrust, even though they've done nothing wrong as yet, characters such as the new Chief of Police, Lord Gold. ANd of course we've not even got onto the garghouls, the smoglodytes or the hideous Crelp who want you to 'please don't hurt us while we kill you.' All in all, the Candleman series is going from strength to strength. It's a book that adults and kids can love, it's got the fear and adventure and humour of Doctor Who with a little twist of twisted weirdness that will have you shaking with laughter and trembling with dread. Bring on book 3 please.

Candle Man Book Two The Society of Dread Glenn Dakin Books Reviews

I'm going to keep it simple and short. This book is amazing with very little fault. I received the first book for my birthday and immediatly bought the second. I recommend this book for anyone who likes myth, magic, adventure, and action. Enjoy!!!!
I read book I. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't stellar. I got a little tired of the descriptions of melting flesh but what can you expect from a hero who's power is melting people? I just hope they don't plan to make a movie (Ewww, no popcorn, please). There were some fun bits and likeable people so I figured I might as well try out book II. I couldn't get past chapter 3. The exposition was so clunky and eye-rollingly bad that I just couldn't make myself continue. I gave it 2 stars because I didn't finish the book (perhaps it gets better?) and a younger audience may overlook the bad dialogue. I read a lot of kids books but this one wasn't for me.
As much as I loved Candle Man, Book One The Society of Unrelenting Vigilance, I have to say that I think the second book in the series, The Society of Dread, is even better. And as pleased as I was to find that my favorite character, Tristus the garghoul, is back to help Theo Wickland, I was equally delighted by the newest evil creatures of the Network, the crelp, and their efforts to destroy him and the rest of humanity. There are other old and new friends and enemies here, as well. The Network under London holds terrible secrets that go beyond the challanges from the first book and, once again, the very different, but entirely complementary talents of Theo and Chloe make them the perfect team to overcome the plans of their enemies. Candle Man, Book Two The Society of Dread is fun and exciting and it's almost impossible to put it down! I can't wait for the third book.
This book/series has so much potential but falls short of where it could go. I will probably read the 3rd book as well but I'm not in a great hurry to do so. The first book started well enough but I kept having the feeling that the author just wanted to make a series and kept holding back so that there could be a second book. This book did move things along rather well but there are gaps that I'm hoping will be addressed in the third book. So I give it three stars because it is ok if you are in between series and just need something to read but it could have been four stars if the author would let go of that "gotta have a series" attitude and give us the story.
Why I read this I absolutely loved the first book in this series and had to continue on with the next.

Plot With this second book in the series, there are new friends introduced along with new enemies. Theo must now descend below ground to save his friends who have been taken and enslaved by a wicked man whose power lies in destruction. there were some great twists to this book that put the world and history of Candle Man into perspective in a way that I wasn't expecting. I absolutely love the setting of these books as the dark setting amplifies the darker plot. The end of the book eluded to another adventure and I cannot wait to read on.

Characters Theo is a character that I would compare a bit to Harry Potter, he's got the complexion, the past and the sort of clumsy way of stepping up to doing his part and saving those he loves. I love his comment about feeling better when he has direction, which shows a lack of confidence in his character. I love flawed characters and Theo definitely has a lot to learn about his powers, how and when to use them, and coming to terms that he will kill when he uses it. I really like how he is developing and can't wait to see what the next book will bring next for him.

Relatability I think fans of underdog heroes, antiheroes, and steampunk will enjoy this series.

Cover Commentary I have to say I love these covers, both US and UK versions of them. (The UK one is pictured above).
It's very frustrating to get into reading a book series that I really like, only to find that the series has no more sequels and is not complete. Where is book 3?
I would recommend this book to anyone really. It's a great book. I loved the action. There is never a dull moment in this book. I'm 11 and I thought it was great but even teenagers would enjoy this excellent book.
